Mayor Frank Yanish was elected during the 2010 elections with 4,121 votes and he will take office in January 2011. This change has created great expectations in the community of Willmar because of the support that mayor Frank expressed for Section 287(g) of the Immigration Act.

“ Section 287(g) of the Immigration Act was passed by congress in 1996 and authorizes the justice department and department of homeland security (DHS) to make arrangements with local law enforcement (state and municipal) so that they may carry out certain functions as U.S. immigration officers.

LOCAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION RECEIVES OVER $200,000 IN FEDERAL FUNDS TO CREATE JOBS

 Willmar, MN (Oct. 26, 2010)—The Willmar Area Multicultural Market (WAMM), an economic development corporation serving rural Willmar, MN, has been awarded its first federal grant of $234,422 from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to support small businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs in an effort that will create permanent new full-time jobs.

  Recognizing the entrepreneurial spirit of its worldly residents, WAMM has developed two core programmatic initiatives to support business development: 1) the Minority Business Center which provides individualized training in areas such as business plan development, marketing and tax assistance, and 2) a Kitchen Incubator, a licensed, shared kitchen for food carts and catering businesses to cost-effectively prepare their products.

Second Annual Latino-Somali Resources Fair

The event will take place on Saturday August 21Time: 11am-4pm Location: KENNEDY ELEMENTARY SCHOOLIn 2009 around 700 people of different age groups and nationalities were present.  This was a unique day where 50 businesses and organizations gathered for the first time to offer their services, answer questions, and assist the community.  The event included organizations not only of Willmar, but from different cities throughout Minnesota. 

This is an invitation for anyone interested in knowing more about immigration, housing, recreation, job opportunities, or small business loans. The second annual Latino-Somali Resources fair will provide information on these points of interest and more.

Learning how to talk about sexuality with your children is not an easy task.  For that reason, as of two years ago the organization Chas has been focusing on providing tools and support to parents as primary sexuality educators.  Currently, Kandiyohi county in Minnesota is the fifth county with the highest number of adolescent pregnancy between the ages of 15 and 19 years of age.
