Willmar, MN (Oct. 26, 2010)—The Willmar Area Multicultural Market (WAMM), an economic development corporation serving rural Willmar, MN, has been awarded its first federal grant of $234,422 from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to support small businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs in an effort that will create permanent new full-time jobs.

Recognizing the entrepreneurial spirit of its worldly residents, WAMM has developed two core programmatic initiatives to support business development: 1) the Minority Business Center which provides individualized training in areas such as business plan development, marketing and tax assistance, and 2) a Kitchen Incubator, a licensed, shared kitchen for food carts and catering businesses to cost-effectively prepare their products.

WAMM will use the funds to continue to build-out the Center, which houses the kitchen incubator and provide rental and office space to 30 minority-owned small businesses. WAMM will also provide no-interest loans to the small businesses to expand and hire more employees. With support from the Latino Economic Development Center in St. Paul, MN, WAMM will provide technical assistance to the business owners by providing classes in bookkeeping, how to write a business plan, marketing tactics and others.

“This past year alone, WAMM has worked with 7 entrepreneurs and we have seen first-hand that small business development contributes to revitalizing the economy by creating jobs in low-income communities, This award enables us the opportunity of investing in individuals who aspire the American dream. In return, WAMM hopes these individuals become socially responsible members of our community” said Roberto Valdez, Program Director at WAMM.

A member of the National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders (NALCAB), WAMM received support from NALCAB to submit the application for this funding. NALCAB is committed to supporting projects from local community development corporations across the country that builds assets in the communities.

“As a national organization, it is our job to ensure that organizations like WAMM have the assistance to access the funding to continue this important work for rural America,” said Noel Poyo, Executive Director at NALCAB.
