Choosing a high quality preschool program for a child, when circumstances are difficult, is one of the most important decisions that parents have to make.  One of the options found throughout various offices across the country is the Head Start program, which counts with offices in every city of the State free of charge.

This program focuses on preparing children between the ages of three and five before entering kindergarten. As a result, the child will have a better cognitive, emotional, physical, and social development.  In order to qualify for this program proof of low income is required; however, there are different types of cases that may be approved. One of the easiest ways to find out if  you qualify for the program is if you  are part of the WEAC program, have Medicare or your children receive child support for not living with the father.

Although, it is a program dedicated to children, it also offers parents an opportunity to identify and develop their strengths and interest.  On a monthly basis enrolled children and their parents have the opportunity to attend the scheduled meetings to discuss the work being done between the child care program, parents and kids.

Currently, Head Start in Minnesota has elected, Maria Birkeland, the first Latina to represent parents of  REGION V (southern agencies, Prairie V, western, south western, MN Valley, three rivers, semcac, and child care R&R).  “As a representative of the community I am very proud to have been chosen for this job. I came across this program when I had my first child.  During that time, I did not speak much English; however, I attended the meetings and tried my best to understand what they said.  Despite the language barrier, I was always willing to participate.  By the time I had my second child I worked in the legal offices of Tejeda Guzman as a bilingual representative.  Later on, I was asked to work as a part time assistant for Head Start.  The pay was great and lunch was included.  That was the ideal job for me because I was able to share with my child and at the same time learning useful skills, understanding better the child‘s behavior, which many times are unknown for us as parents.” Maria said.

Maria Birkeland also added, “now, I have a greater responsibility as the first Latina to be elected to represent families during the next three years at different local and national events.  This is a unique and unforgettable experience that I share with all those involved in the area that I oversee.  The tasks are many because I have to ensure that I teach people what I learn in the workshops.  Monthly reports have to be submitted and explained at the numerous conferences and training workshops we provide.  I believe that parents should attend the meetings for head start and become more involved with the organization in order to have a better opportunity to learn and work alongside with their children.”

To find out if you qualify or not please contact Head Start to determine which office is closest to you For instance, in Willmar the office is Heartland located at 200 4th street Southwest (MN 56201).  If you need more information please contact 866-763-6481.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
