On December 16, Willmar welcomed a Latina leader that represent us in the Minnesota state senate. Her name is Patricia Torres. Approximately, three hundred people arrived ready and willing to listen and learn how to participate in the government’s political process.
Patricia Torres initiated the conference by narrating her life story in the United States of America. Like many other immigrants, in search of better opportunities, she faced similar difficulties that others that come to this country encounter. Patricia became a lawyer in Colombia and for many reasons she relocated to the U.S and began working in a factory earning $12 an hour. This was a good option for her because she didn’t really need to speak English. After some years, a Puerto Rican woman told her “ My child, what are you doing mending buttons in a factory? You, a bilingual career woman can work as a volunteer lawyer advocating for children.” The decision to work as a volunteer was not an easy task considering she would have to do defend the rights of children in English. Despite, the great responsibility she decided to become a children’s advocate and she volunteered for five years. Later, the government lost the necessary funds for that project and then she decided to begin her college career in the United States of America and obtain a Masters Degree. After obtaining her Masters classmates, professors, social workers, and friends advised her to join the senate. This was a great challenge for Patricia and at the same time a great opportunity to help other people. This is how she began her work in 2006 for the Minnesota State Senate. After listening to the words of Patricia two women leaders of the Latino and Somali community of Willmar talked about their experiences as minorities in this country and the ways they have succeeded after many years of hard work. Now, Patricia invites all women and minorities to become delegates and to participate in the democratic process that will take place on February 02, 2010 throughout Minnesota. It doesn’t matter if you are a democrat or a republican or independent you may participate on that day and make a difference. All you have to do is provide proof of age (18 and over) and citizenship and find out the location and time where this event will take place in your community on February 02nd.
